Hipátia de Alexandria (c. 370 - c. 415) é considerada a primeira mulher matemática na história da humanidade e que temos algum conhecimento razoavelmente seguro e abrangente a respeito. Ela era considerada uma mulher fisicamente atraente para a sua época e celibatária por opção. Ela se considerava uma neo-Platônica, pagã e também seguidora das idéias de Pitágoras.

Infelizmente a sua morte foi muito trágica, pois em um dia quente de março (414 antes da nossa Era) uma multidão de zeladores religiosos a capturaram, tiraram-lhe as roupas, esquartejaram-na com objetos pontiagudos, despedaçaram-lhe o corpo e, finalmente, lhe queimaram os pedaços. Alguns acreditam que a mataram por motivos de perseguição religiosa, pois ela se considerava pagã.

A sua morte desencadeou a saída de muitos acadêmicos de Alexandria e este fato marcou o final de séculos de progresso grego na Matemática.

Alexandria's Hypatia (c. 370 - c. 415) is considered to be the first mathematical woman in the history of mankind and we have some reasonably safe and comprehensive knowledge of it. She was considered a physically attractive woman for her time and celibate by choice. She considered herself a neo-Platonic, pagan and also a follower of Pythagoras's ideas.

Unfortunately her death was very tragic, for on a warm March day (414 before our Age) a multitude of religious caretakers captured her, stripped her of her clothes, quartered her with sharp objects, shattered her body, and, finally the pieces burned to him. Some believe they killed her for religious persecution because she considered herself a pagan.

His death triggered the departure of many academics from Alexandria and this marked the end of centuries of Greek progress in mathematics.
